WestportRiverWatershedAllianceMerit Award Winners Announced

The Westport River Watershed Alliance (WRWA) offers two yearly $500 merit awards for graduating seniors living in the watershed. WRWA has a proud 35-year record of environmental stewardship.  The merit award offers an opportunity for us to honor two students who have demonstrated their concern to protect our watershed environment.

This year’s merit award winners are, from Bishop Stang High School, Cody Flynn and from Tiverton High School, Trevor Criollos . The winners truly exhibit a deep concern for the state of our global environment as they pursue careers in environmental science. Each student offers great hope for the future health of our planet.

The Westport River Watershed Alliance Merit Award was created to celebrate the lives of William and Ruth Heath and Margo C. Boote.  William and Ruth Heath were committed to environmental issues and protection of the natural world, as well as to social justice and global peace and harmony. Margo C. Boote was very involved in her community and the world around her.  She not only portrayed an active commitment to the environmental mission in her actions, but also had a deep spiritual connection with the environment as was shown in her poetry.

Thank you to all of the applicants~

2012 Merit Awards

We are pleased to offer two $500 scholarship opportunities for graduating seniors in the Westport River watershed: Fall River, Dartmouth, Freetown, Westport, Little Compton, and Tiverton.  One award was made possible by the generosity of the late Margot C. Boote, who was active in education and the environment. The second award was initiated by Bill Heath in memory of his parents Ruth and Bill Heath.

The merit award applications are available by clicking the link below or by calling the WRWA office at 508-636-3016. Local high schools also have applications on file at their guidance department office.

All applications are due to WRWA  (PO Box 3427, Westport, MA 02790) no later than April 1, 2012.

The Alliance has a proud record of environmental stewardship and has expressed  its commitment to carry on this tradition.  The merit awards offer an opportunity to honor students who have demonstrated a passion for learning about and protecting the watershed environment.
